This collection consists of postcards and photographs collected by Joan Goodall. Areas depicted include Old Massett, Hazelton, Kitwangar, Port Simpson and other areas. Most images have totem poles or other massive carvings depicted.

File contains a combination of images of Kwakwaka'wakw artifacts housed in various museums and images of historical Kwakwaka'wakw villages on Vancouver Island and along the Northwest Coast of British Columbia. Artifacts include totem poles, bentwood boxes, carvings, masks, and Kwakwaka'wakw artwork such as paintings and drawings. There are historical photographs of the following villages: Gwat'sinuxw (Quatsino), Kwikwasutinuxw (Gilford Island), A'wa'etlala Village (Knight's Inlet), Mamalikala (Village Island), Wiwekalu Village of T'la'mataxw (Campbell River), Kwixa Village (Salmon River), Dunaxda'xw Village (New Vancouver), and Gwa'sala Village (Smith Inlet). The textual records include information about some of the photographs, identifying items such as the people, the villages, and/or the artifacts depicted in the photographs.

This file contains an assortment of photographs, sketches, correspondences and notes.

Photographs include:
• Two (2) images from the National Museum of Canada, one depicting a totem pole and other other a Tlingit house front screen (1900) from ‘Killiswoo’ [Killisnoo].
• Five (5) images of a small soapstone carving.
• 2 images of a sketch made from an unidentified carving.
• An image of a longhouse at Klemtu (1885) taken by G. T. Emmons; a woolly dog appears to be depicted in the photograph.
• Panoramas of Metlakatla (1881; photographer’s name illegible) and Port Simpson [Lax Kw'alaams] (1884; attributed to Maynard).
• An image of the Metlakatla Church, an unidentified woman posing with a bentwood box.

Texts include the following:
• A memo by Wilson Duff commenting on an attached report authored by Mike Kew on ethical research guidelines for working with First Nations. The report was prepared for the Fish Lake Advisory Committee and the “Indians of the Williams Lake District”.
• A manuscript (author not provided) titled “Meanings of totem poles”
• Nine (9) photocopied images of bentwood boxes
• An inventory of Wilson Duff books with the heading “Martine’s list of Wilson’s books”
• A photocopied transcript of an oral history about spirits, provided by Charles F. Newcombe, with glossary of terms in Tlingit.
• A brief text on Haida portrait masks, including images and handwritten notes by Duff.
• A map of Musqueam place names sketched by Mike Kew, with information provided by James Point.
• Handwritten notes taken from multiple texts authored by Victor Turner on ritual symbolism.
• A letter from Ted Twarecki to Wilson Duff with information on “Nootka” [Nuu-chah-nulth] sealing harpoons in the National Museum of Canada collections.
• A letter from Joan Vastokas refers to a paper on the Peterborough site [likely referring to the petroglyph site in that area] sent to Duff with the letter.
• A computer print-out with information about Musqueam wet-site basketry with comments by James Point.
• A valuation and photocopies of cultural objects, including an Edenshaw cane, provided to Peter Downes by Wilson Duff.
• A letter and photocopy of a published text by G. T. Emmons (with G. P. L. Miles) titled “Shamanistic charms”.
• A manuscript by an unidentified author discussing the “Chilcotin Indians” [Tsilhqot’in], attempting to summarize facts about the community from an anthropological-historical perspective. The text appears to be missing pages, based on the incomplete sentence on the last page.

The file contains what appear to be narrative accession notes for seven (7) items donated to MOA by Dr. George H. Raley in 1948-1949. Notes and catalogue records provide provenance and cultural context, including information pertaining to object numbers A1571 a-b (noted as 18 Bella Bella/Shaman's box; poss. A1764 a-b), A1465, A1776 a-c (noted as 'The angel'), possibly A6519 (listed as A1138), A1800 (Gumbegalis/ancestor figure), and other objects that may have been repatriated or which are not currently identifiable in the MOA Catalogue.

Notes provide dates of 1948 and 1949 for Duff's conversation with Dr. Raley. Several objects incorrectly attribute communities of origin due outdated practice of grouping peoples based on linguistic similarities.

Fonds consists of 45 glass-plate lantern slides featuring scenes from Osterhout's work with B.C. First Nations, including Haida, Tsimshian and Kwakwaka'wakw. Images document First Nations individuals, communities, totem poles and landscapes of British Columbia.

File contains images of Tsimshian artifacts housed in museums in British Columbia and in what is now known as the Canadian Museum of History. The file also contains images of Tsimshian villages along the Nass River, and historical photos of Tsimshian peoples.
