            Part of Wilson Duff fonds

This file contains letters and draft texts, including annotated maps, created by James Hackler and sent to Wilson Duff and Michael "Mike" Kew. Hackler's writings discuss phratric societies, clan, and matrilineal social structures, and how changes to fishing, hunting and social organization occurred due to the influence of the Hudson's Bay Company and Canadian government. Included in the file are notes that Hackler copied from the journals and reports written by Charles Ross and William Brown, both employees of Hudson's Bay Company, during visits to "Babine Country".

A text titled "Fort Babine: The Unwanted Trading Post" discusses the tensions between Carrier peoples and the Hudson's Bay Company, with some discussion of the relationships between Carrier and Tsimshian communities. Additional texts include "Phratic Organization of the Carrier at Babine Lake", "Hunting Territories of the Babine Carrier", "A Comparison of Studies on the Social Organization of the Carriers", and "The Removal of Fishing Weirs and the Effect on the Social Organization of the Babine Indians".
